It's a cloudy raw day. All the ice has melted in the harbour. At 1 pm my punt is launched. Jake, Troy and I paddle to Cottles Island.
Rex is aboard of his boat. Harry and Dorothy should be home from Florida today. The long liners have gone to the ice floes. We walk through  20 inches of snow through the mile long trail to the end of the island. We look out over the bay from  Cottles Island point. There's not a boat to be seen. We can seen Black Island, Expoits Island, Samson's Island, Cape John, Bridge Port, Store House, Varked Island and Puzzles Harbour. It's lonely but very relaxing.

UPDATE on the OWL - see picture below.
On Thursday February 3 on a bright sunny day at minus ten degrees with a light westerly wind, people were enjoying the day on snow mobiles along the shore line and up through the woods here and there. Some people were breaking a road to their wood. In John Pryor’s garden cove near Little Harbour in Cottlesville a horned owl about forty centimeters high was spotted perched on a slender dry sprig extending out of the snow about a meter high. To the dismay of the passersby it was noticed that its left wing was hanging off. The owl remained there for that day. People wandered if it would survive. On Friday it had somehow moved to a stump extending out of the bank on the shoreline. People stood very close to it and it responded by opening its peak and a making an mild owl sound. On Saturday it could no longer perch and was on the snow on the shore. Crows were pecking off some of its feathers. At this point Stephen Barnes felt that it was time to contact wildlife at Lewisporte. He put it in a coat and brought it back to the community where Wilfred Burry from wildlife took it and carried it on to the vet in
Gander. Wilfred said that it was a very young bird.

As of Thursday February 10 Dr Douglas Tweedie of Gander reports that the bird is recuperating. He felt that indeed that the bird might have been without food for a number of weeks. He feed the bird moose and rabbit meat by giving it very little at the beginning. The wing is damaged at a point equivalent to the human wrist. He feels that it’s very unlikely that it will grow back to normal. That being the case it will have to carried to the Salmonier Nature Park in the very near future

February 4 is a beautiful day here. For two days now this owl has been sitting on a branch with a broken wing in John Pryor's Garden Cove up in Little Harbour. Junior Anstey stands there feeling sorry for the poor thing.  Junior Anstey, Doyle head and Hardy Troake looks on.
