Lewis Canning

Royal Newfoundland Navel Reserve

World War I

SMN (Seaman) Lewis Canning enlisted to serve in the Newfoundland Royal Navel Reserve in 1916. He trained for war duties on the training vessel HMS Britain. After completing navel training he was transferred to other ships doing war service. His ships were targets for the German submarines and his convey encountered attack.. He experienced ships in his fleet blasted out of the water. Luckily his ship was spared.

After the war, he returned to Cottles Island and married Sarah Rideout. They had seven children: 2 boys (Sidney and Gilbert) and 5 girls (Florence, Audrey, Pauline, Myrtle and Masie.) Lewis worked hard as a logger and fishermen until he retired. He died in 1962.

This is Raymond White

Each year a veteran is profiled and the closed family member is asked to lay the wreath. This year it was Raymond White.  His brother Gilbert White, presently a resident of Lewisporte was nine year old when he lost his brother Raymond White who was returning home on leave. Gilbert and his daughter Gladys Curtis lay the wreath this year. Other wreaths that were laid were Meta Watkins for Salvation Army, Whylie Canning for Pentecostal Church, Lester King for Council, Verna Rideout for Cottlesville Recreation and everyone pinned a poppy in the cross. The event was chaired by Pastor Reg Moulton and devotional was done by captain Hedley Bungay. Four girls Danielle Wheeler, Casandra Rideout, Quin Nemechek and Serina Gillard sang the National Anthem in French and English.

Profile read by his niece Gladys Curtis:

Raymond White of Cottlesville, son of Arthur and Louisa White, served in the Royal Navy during World war II. While returning to Cottlesville on annual leave on the “Caribou” it came under attack in the Cabot Strait. In the early morning of October 14, 1942 at 3:30 a.m. forty miles from Port Aux Basques, Raymond White lost his life. One hundred thirty six other lives were lost that morning. His sacrifice brought our freedom. We should never forget the price our veterans paid. They fought for us. Today we remember them.
