Cottlesville Book Chapter 8
CHAPTER 8
FAMILIAR SITES
Icebergs
Icebergs were a scenic sight in 1995. People from all over
Newfoundland, Canada and other parts of the world came to get a glimpse
of the thousands of years old ice which floated down from the
Arctic. Pieces of the iceberg which fell off or turned over made
big crashing noises, similar to the noise of thunder.
In years past people from our town use to go out in boat and chop off
pieces of the berg and sell it as ice. The ice was utilized by
burying it in sawdust in spring to be used later that
summer. Sawdust would keep it from melting for one to two months,
depending upon how deep it was buried.
Levi's Island
Levi's Island is an island in the mouth of Tracies Cove separated from
the rest of the community by a small tickle. It was also
inhabited when Cottlesville was first settled. The first settler
was uncle Johnny Manuel. The last settler was Levi Anstey and no
one lives there now. The island was never recorded of having a
name of it's own, however, it has a local name taken from it's last
resident, Levi.
