BOATS

During the year Marine Atlantic in Lewisporte has freight vessels going to and from Labrador.  On its passage the boats can be seen between Cottlesville and Samson’s Island.


    Russian Boat

During July 1990,  a Russian boat  arrived into Cottlesville.  220  people lived aboard the ship.  It had a fish factory and a volleyball court.  This ship was just off Breakwater Fisheries.  Wallace Cooper delivered male caplin to it.  The Russians used to come ashore and try to sell or trade their things such as watches and cameras.  Some even gave their things away as gifts.

The 3 hp power engine was one of the first engines.  The first engine in a boat in Cottlesville was in 1914.  Ford Rideout or Eli Anstey had a "Bridgeport" engine built in Nova Scotia.  The Acadia and then the Atlantic was available up to 10 hp in the trap boats using double cylinders.  A common man had a four Acadia in a 21 foot trap skiff.  They fished in these boats all around the bay, some went as far as Englee and Hooping Harbour.  The first night in Pacquet, the second night at Harbour Deep.
